Conflict Resolution and Poverty Reduction through Entrepreneurial Training

Niger Delta Environment and Relief Foundation(NIDEREF) supported by Bodo Mediation Process is set to implement an entrepreneurial trainingprogramme in Bodo City as a consequence of the November 2014, Bodo community compensation award from Shell, for oil spills for which the company was culpable. Each adult in the community received about 600,000 thousand Naira, an amount if prudently pooled into investment channels would reduce poverty in the conflict ravaged community. In recent years, crude oil pollution and poverty have always been at the root of recurrent violent conflict in this community. For instance, from 2006 to 2008, Bodo witnessed one of the deadliest intra-communal conflicts in the Niger Delta. The conflict was politically motivated and acted out by young people comprising mainly unemployed youths, who aligned themselves with political leaders struggling for supremacy during the 2003 and 2007 general elections in the country. Some of these combatant groups, who were mobilized by politicians desperate for power, took to illegal oil bunkering and artisanal refining following the occurrence of a major spill in 2008 and 2009 which destroyedthe local fishing economy in Bodo. It is obvious from the foregoing that the unemployment situation was one of the major causes of conflict in the community.Economic empowerment of the youths through entrepreneurial training, therefore, can play a key role in minimizing illegal oil bunkeringactivities as well asimprovinglivelihood and economic development in the city.
It is for this reason that NIDEREF believes that,in order to realize the socioeconomic development goals, the beneficiaries have to receive training in entrepreneurship and financial literacy to reposition them for prudent investment of money. Also, another feature of the engagement will besocial re-orientation seminar aimed at changing the mindset of community residents in order to contribute to building a more stable and vibrant society.
Venue: St. Pius X College Chapel, Bodo City, Gokana LGA, Rivers State, Nigeria
Date of Commencement: May 6, 2015
Time: 9 am
The project will target all recipients of Shell compensation; Council of Chiefs and Elders; Community Development Committees; youths, including those involved in illegal bunkering and artisanal refining; social clubs; women groups; and faith-based groups.
